Try this to avoid overpacking on your next trip!

If you’re like me and tend to overpack, there’s a less stressful approach than trying to convince yourself you can bring it all. Don’t pack your fears. Whatever comes up, you can handle it. I’ve compiled a list of travel must haves and a few tips to help you get organized with essentials.

Try the 5-4-3-2-1 packing rule:

  • 5 tops

  • 4 bottoms (shorts, skirts, pants, jeans)

  • 3 dresses and shoes

  • 2 layering options (or swimsuits)

  • 1 hat, pair of sunglasses, accessories

This list can be interchangeable depending on where you’re going and what you’re most comfortable in. I tend to wear more dresses when traveling because they’re easy to pack and effortless to dress up or down. So I would probably pack less tops and bottoms and more dresses and layering options.

Ask your hairstylist to make some recommendations on travel sized products.

They always know the best beauty secrets while on the go. Mine always makes me a beauty travel bag full of necessities that I can just throw in my suitcase. If not, allow for 2-4 weeks to order any travel sized beauty products.

Pack light and pack layers.

Nobody will see you multiple times except the company you're with, so plan on re-wearing some outfits in order to limit what you bring.

Consider just a carryon to avoid stressful international connections or lost luggage. And leave room—or bring a small bag—to fill during your stay. You will want to bring things home with you.

Pack for the destination and consider international differences.

Check the cultural styles if you’re traveling to another country. For example, if you’re traveling to Europe, opt for smart and put together outfits, no athleisure wear—leave your lulu lemon at home.

Bring a smaller fashion bag (such as a fanny pack) instead of a big purse.

Invest in a great pair of walking shoes. You can have style and comfort if you look in the right places.

Bring a scarf or jacket. These are great for the airplane, easy to carry with you if you need more coverage (eg. entry into some churches/temples), as well as dressing up a more casual outfit.

Pack international plug adapters and ensure your devices run on the required volts, or you will need a voltage converter.

Make sure you don’t need an international cell phone plan where you’re traveling. Wifi is available in many places but you don't want to get stuck with lofty roaming fees.

Let your bank/credit cards know you are traveling.

Pack for comfort during travel.

Travel in something comfortable but something that allows for you to transition right from the plane in case of flight delays.

Melatonin gummies are great for the long flights and to help reset from jet lag on the trip. I recommend Sleepyhead by Winged Women.

Don’t forget the travel pillow. As a bodyworker, my favorite one is TRTL. I personally use this one and find it to be the most comfortable.

Compression Socks to help with circulation on the flight. I like Comrad.

Pill Organizers for supplements and medication. Dosey is a super cute and travel friendly brand.

Hydrate Hydrate Hydrate. Those airplanes and the fun airport Spritz’s and in flight cocktails will contribute to dehydration. Bring a water bottle and some Drip Drop dehydration packets to help balance.

Final tip.

If you have a “just in case” pile, leave it home. If and when you need something, just buy it.

Like, I will probably find that I need one more pair of shoes while I’m gone…
